Did you know that all dogs shed? There are some breeds of dogs that shed less than others, but if the dog has hair (and there are only a few truly hairless breeds) that dog will shed. Dogs with long hair and single-coats shed less than short hair, double-coated dogs. Different types of coats have different growth cycles. Short haired dogs have hair growth cycles that may only last a few days. That means they shed a lot! Long haired dogs have growth cycles that can last months or even years, so they shed very little. Generally, pets shed twice a year and the process is prompted by the change in temperature. However, there are a lot of other factors affect shedding – medicine, anesthetic from surgery, males and females may shed at different times, etc. What to do? Brush your dog often and regularly. Brush out shedding hair when you bathe your dog to help reduce what falls out normally.
